Shopping! Shopping! Shopping!

Hi, I'm Elliott Joachim!

Welcome to Lake Chapala
and Ajijic, Mexico.

I'm sure you have lots of questions about living in Mexico, just like I did before I moved. Give me a call toll free from US 866-306-9353
or send me an email
so we can chat about it! In Lakeside (376)766-6168.

Shopping! Shopping! Shopping!
Shopping! Shopping! Shopping!

Question of the Month, from
A VidaNews reader via email:

Q. If I moved to Lakeside, would I be able
to buy things like sheets and towels?
Are there any places to shop? What
     about TV's and clothing?

A. Those thudding sounds you are hearing
are the jaws of first-time Guadalajara
mall shoppers hitting the floor. Before
moving to Lakeside, I lived in the
Washington DC Metro area, home of
Tyson's Galleria, and I thought I had seen
it all as far as malls were concerned.
Naturally, I too was concerned about
where to buy things in Mexico, like
food, appliances, toilet paper, oh, and
of course shoes, shoes, shoes! We have
     devoted this month's issue exclusively
to Shopping Malls in Guadalajara, since
I am too embarrassed to tell you the
story of my first eye-opening experience
shopping at Gallerias Mall in Guadalajara.

Finding the items you need, or just browsing in a familiar mall environment makes a "Trip to Guad" a fun outing for many Lakeside residents. Throw in lunch and a movie and you have a pleasant day trip. If you just need to pick up a few things at WalMart, Cosco, or Home Depot, plan on an hour or two for the round trip by car. The pricing for department and specialty store merchandise is comparable to what you find in North America.
             (100 Pesos = approx. 10 Dollars).

Guadalajara is located 45 kilometers (27 miles) from Lakeside, and the drive is like traveling into any big city from the suburbs. There are also tour buses available from Ajijic to the shopping centers once a month. Or if shopping just isn't your thing, you can give your Cosco list to a local service which will purchase and deliver your items for a small fee. In upcoming issues we will cover the charming shops in Lakeside, along with the mini WalMart located in nearby Chapala.

"Guadalajara is the undisputed  shopping capital of México.  Modern malls, some very specialized, are located throughout the city.  Tlaquepaque and, on a smaller scale, Tonalá are located within the city limits of Guadalajara and offer a shopping experience that is considered by many to be unmatched in the world."
